09_29_09_offshore_wind.jpgDenmark’s DONG Energy and the UK utility Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) have formed a joint venture to develop three offshore wind farms in the Dutch sector of the North Sea.

Scottish and Southern Energy has rights to develop three offshore wind farms in Dutch waters with a total capacity of just over 1000 MW. The consented projects are Den Helder 1, Breeveertien II and West Rijn wind farms.

But whether and when the wind farms will be built depends on the Dutch subsidies for offshore wind, the companies say.

“The timing of future developments and any investment decision will be dependent upon, amongst other things, the extent of the financial support for offshore wind farms available from the Dutch government through its renewables support mechanism”, a statement from SSE says.

"Offshore wind projects continue to be dependent upon appropriate support regimes being in place and the successful development of these Dutch assets will be no different”, says Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE.

DONG Energy is an experienced player in the offshore wind sector, and has just opened the Horns Rev II wind farm off the coast of Jutland. It is also building the giant London Array offshore wind farm in the UK along with E.ON and Masdar.
